For centuries, slavery was a well-established form of globalization. This form of globalization was, however, declared a crime against humanity at the 2001 United Nations (UN) Conference on Racism in Durban, South Africa, the United Nations during this conference proposed St Benedict as an international role model among such great people of colour as Dumas, Puskin, Robeson, Dubois and Schoelcher. As a follower of St Francis, he connects with the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development in that St Francis is the patron saint of the care of creation (ecology). Benedict deserves to be remembered today as the ex-slave who became a world famous role model in the 16th century. He is Africa's first officially canonized saint.
