This is the story of the 33 Chinese Martyrs who went through hardships and persecution because they stood for the truth. It all began when Father Ephrem Seignol, a Trappist Monk went to China to set up an Abbey of Trappist monks. He was responding to the needs of the Catholics in the village of Fan Shan. They were in great need for Mass and Sacraments on regular basis, and for this they offered to sell to the monks a place to build their abbey in exchange for these. The abbey was named Our Lady of Consolation. This name was suggested to Fr Ephrem from France, by the future St John Bosco when they met in Italy. It was situated in the Northern part of China in a valley called valley of Yang Kia Ping (translation: 'yang Family Land"), about 120 kilometers from Beijing. Led by Fr Ephrem from France, the Abbey was full of Monks from Europe and also from the local China. By 1963, the abbey was a community of about 120 monks. Two years later, they opened a daughter house, Our Lady of Joy in the province of Hebei.
