Laura's story reads like some adventure novel but it really happened. Laura was born on April 5th 1891 in Santiago, the Capital city of Chile. Little is known about her father, except that he was from some noble family and was a captain in the army. In 1885 he was living in Temuco, 500km. south of Santiago and there he met Mercedes Pino, Laura's mother. Most probably they did not get married and a few years later he abandoned Mercedes Pino, Laura's Mother. Mama Mercedes did not lose courage but concentrated all her time and energy on bringing up her two beautiful daughters. She earned money by making clothes and was so successful that she was soon running a small General Store.
