The author, Bishop Rodrigo Mejia, helps us to understand that the beatitudes are not just promises that belongs to the future, to eternal life. Rather they are attitudes of the spirit that are a reality already in the present time. They are formulated in the present tense, and not in the future tense. They are a source of real happiness for this life even though this happiness will be fulfilled in eternal life. Numerous biblical scholars have written excellent books and essays on the beatitudes. Obviously, the richer the reader's background the deeper his/her understanding will be. However, the beatitudes were originally addressed not to biblical scholars but to the simple people of Jesus' time. Jesus addressed them not the Masters of the Law, as the common people, "...he saw the crowds" (Mt 5:1) Each reader will gain important insights for a deeper living of the Christian life after 'making' this retreat. Just as St Augustine invites us to meditate on hail well-known sentence to the Lord, "You made us for you, and our heart is restless until it rests in you, " so the author challenges us, "if you are satisfied with less than God, the beatitudes are not for you."
