In Stories from Bethany, Fr Emmanuel Katongole, writes biblical reflections on the Church in Africa based on the Gospel story of Martha, Mary and Lazarus at Bethany. Through these reflections, he helps the reader to reflect on the concrete realities of the Church in Africa, calling the reader to action. He offers these reflections particularly to African Christian leaders and theologians as an example of a particular methodology and a way of doing theology in an African context. Fr Emmanuel invites the readers not only to stand within the word of Bethany, but also try out the Word made Flesh methodology as they reflect on the gift of the word(scripture) within their respective contexts and locations. This book is therefore intended as a resource for personal or group reflection and discussion on Christian mission in Africa. Whether alone or with a group, the best way to use this book is not to read it in one sitting, but spread it out over a few days, even weeks, to allow sufficient time to sit with each Bethany story. Fr Emmanuel hopes that the readers will be provoked to a new  mode of thinking about the Church in Africa.
