St Paul was able to take the earliest oral tradition about Jesus, in the light of the Hebrew scriptures of the Old Testament and of his experience of Christ in his own life and that of his converts, and develop a profound knowledge of Christ and of Salvation that embrace just about every aspect of Christian life. It is no exaggeration to say that he was thus not only the earliest but the greatest of Christian theologians.
