This is the last of three small books on the consecrated life in Africa. Celibacy and African Culture appeared in 1998. Religious Poverty in Africa appeared early in 1999. This book now treats the vow of obedience. As in the other two books, the vow is discussed in the African context, this time against the background of African traditions are used to illuminate the nature of religious obedience. As will be seen, not all the African cultural material is relevant to the obedience of the Christian who aspires to be a radical follower of Jesus, though it may explain certain pitfalls that are common in Africa. Unlike the previous two books of the series, the present work is not the outcome of discussion in a workshop or day of reflection. This is perhaps a disadvantage. However, several of the ideas have been discussed with individuals, mostly staff members  and students of Tangaza College and I gladly acknowledge their contribution and encouragements.
