He was only eight years old, but already had learnt to look after himself and so became, known as the 'Quick one' by the town people. His home was a corner of the stable belonging to the inn at the gate of the city. Most of the travelers entered or left through this gate. The Quick one earned his living by running errands for the inkeeper. He was quick, fearless, and his active fingers added to his poor diet by snatching bread or fruit from the stalls as he ran by. His cheerful smile and willingness to help made the people accept him.
