A son born to the modest family of lieutenant Wojtyla and his wife, Emilia, on 18 may 1920. It was a moment of great joy as the midwife opened the window and Emilia's bedroom was filled with the chanting of Latin hymns from a nearby church. Emilia smiled as the midwife placed the baby on her arms. Tears of Joy rolled down her face as she gazed at him. On 1 November 1946, Karol was ordained a priest in the private chapel of Cardinal Sapieha. No one else was present for the celebration. Soon after his ordination, Fr Karol had to leave for Rome to continue his studies. When the day to leave came, he boarded the train with great excitement. At the age of 26, he was leaving his country Poland for the first time.
