Having interacted with Paul VI for almost 25 years, I developed a growing admiration for him, from our first meeting when he was Archbishop of Milan to his death as Pope in Castelgandolfo. In these pages I see the essence of Paul VI's personality: the tension of his passionate love for Jesus Christ and hence his generous, tireless service to the Church, mystery of the Risen Christ. This is therefore not a Biography of Paul VI, and even less a secretary's memoirs. It is a highlight of events and recollections of the years in Milan, and much more of those of the papacy. My intention is to outline the luminous and fatherly figure of this Pope, without interfering in the ongoing canonical process. Paul VI still speaks. His words are an echo of God's own word, which enlightens the journey of history towards a civilization of love.
