On the 13th of November 354, Monica gave birth to her first child Augustine. She was filled with joy at the birth of her child, whom she loved and cherished. Augustine caused his mother Monica much pain and suffering. He was a very brilliant boy, but not an exemplary student though his parents had very high hopes for him. He did his best to avoid anything that did not interest him. Aware of him been intelligence his parent decided to send him to Madaura which was a university town where he could develop his skills. Augustine was at home whenever he was on vacation from school. He continued to have great respect for his mother, and Monica never failed to welcome him. During his visits, Augustine never mentioned anything regarding his son or his new religion to her. However Monica knew everything from Romanianus and Licentius. Monica continued to pray for her son Augustine, hoping that he would one day come back to his senses and turn away from his wayward life.
