Bishop Hubert Bucher was born in Regensburg, Germany. Ordained a priest for that diocese in 1957, his bishop granted him leave to work as Fidei Donum missionary in South Africa. For ten years he worked among the Xhosa people in the Eastern Cape, building up a new parish in Dordrecht. After a short break to study missiology in Rome and Oxford he was tasked with inculturating the Chiro Youth movement in the country while serving as its National Chaplain. In 1977 Pope Paul VI appointed him as Bishop of Bethlehem, a diocese covering the Eastern part of South Africa's free state Province. Emeritus since 2009, he now lives in the historic Mariann hill Mission founded in 1882, cradle of the Missionaries of Mariann hill Congregation.
