A young girl is relegated to servitude at a boarding school when her father goes missing and is presumed dead
Seven year old Sara Crewe was travelling to England with her father, Captain Crewe. She had never been to England before, because she was born in India. Her mother died when she was born and as a result, she was very close to her father, who was a very rich man. He and Sara were very fond of each other and did everything together. But the time came for Sara to begin classes in school, so her father decided to send her to England to a boarding school, called Select Seminary for young Ladies. Sara was quite sad, because she knew that she would be separated from her father whom she loved so much. “Papa,” she whispered,” are we almost there? Can’t you stay with me? I will be lonely without you and will miss you terribly. You can go to classes with me.” “Yes, Sara. We are almost there, and no, I cannot stay with you. You will not be lonely because you will have lots of girls your own age going to school with you and you will have so many friends. But I will write to you every week and come to visit you whenever I can. You will be so busy, that you won’t even notice how quickly time will fly and we can be together again.” Then he gave Sara a big hug and with a lump in his throat, said, “Here we are, Darling. This will be your new home for a while.”
