God said to Jonah: “Go to Nineveh, the great city. Tell them that in 40 days the city will be destroyed because of so much evil,” Jonah woke up and ran away because he did not want to listen to God. He went to Joppa and found a ship sailing for Tarshish. He bought a ticket for the trip and sailed with other men. After the ship left, God hurled a violent wind upon the sea, and suddenly a great storm developed so that the ship was going to sink. The men threw the cargo into the sea in order to save the ship and shouted: “Hold firm the rudder, otherwise the ship will overturn!” Meanwhile, what was Jonah doing? He was peacefully sleeping in his cabin. Then the captain came to him and said: “Rise up Why are you sleeping? Come and pray to your God to save us.” The men said: “This storm is not normal. Someone among us has offended God. This is the reason why we are facing this tragedy. Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this misfortune.”
