The African writers in this volume recognise that in the past the church has limited the Christ-experience to particular Western forms based on Western beliefs, values and systems. Their agenda now is to produce a theology that is explicity inculturated in their own milieu. They are aware right from the start that their product is addressed chiefly to their own context. Their reformulation of Christianity in its new culture may well be capable of enriching the church globally (as inculturated theologies have clearly already done). However theologians of inculturations will not insist that their product is going to be automatically relevant, let alone binding, outside its culture of origin. The Papers in this edition were part of, or evolved out of, two workshops on inculturation in 1995 and 1996, organised by Catholic Psychological Services of Troyville. There are three parts in this book, dealing with Pastoral Inculturation (Part l), Liturgy (Part II) and Spirituality (Part lll). The essays show some of the areas that are calling out for inculturation and offer practical proposals. Our expectation is that at least some of it will be of interest to a wide readership. Hopefully this work will go some way to show people that much is already happening in the field of inculturation, and that what is taking place perfects rather than threatens global Christian communion.
