Edel was born on September 14, 1907, in Greenae, a small town in the country of Ireland. Her parents, Mr Charles Quinn and Mrs Louise Burke, had five children, with Edel being the eldest. The family lived in simplicity and joy, with a deep environment of warmth and freedom. Mr Quinn, whose work involved constant travelling, was a manager at the National Bank in the town of Cahir. His job was a bit far from Greenane, the birth place of Edel so the whole family moved to this new area. In Cahir, Edel went to a school run by the Loreto sisters. Here she was loved by her teachers and was quite popular in school. One of the sisters wrote of her: "Edel was the centre of any group bent towards fun or mischief." She was like any ordinary child but what stood out in her was a spirit of simplicity liveliness, unselfishness and most of all her gift as a good organizer.
