Saint Augustine of Hippo (A.D.354-430) was one of the outstanding figures of the declining Roman Empire. Bishop, father and Doctor of the Church, he converted after a stormy youth to become one of the greatest saints who ever live. Greatness is all the more admirable when it is achieved against odds. Such is the case when a great sinner becomes a Great Saint. From his own account, he lived a life of sin until his conversion to Christianity at the age of 32. Twelve years later he gave an account of his search for the truth in the Confessions. " You Lord have made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you" (Conf: 1,1,1;PL 32 659-651)
