A brief guide in understanding the Scriptures read on the Sundays of the Church Year. These notes are not homilies and they are not to be read out to a congregation. They belong rather to the time of preparation for the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist.
One page is devoted to each Sunday. Despite the brevity of the comments, It is hoped that they will repay meditative reading and that the reader will take advantage of the references to other scripture passages that are offered. If these are used as "helps to homilies" then their aim is to assist the preacher to discover what the Texts meant when they were originally written. The homilist is to apply them to the needs of a congregation today. As one bishop wrote to his priests, "The preacher is more likely to grasp what a passage means today if he has understood what it meant yesterday."
