The time when children were told that babies were bought or dropped from heaven is long gone. Even when parents told such stories to their children, it was because they felt unable to communicate the mystery of prenatal life. Perhaps they themselves were unable to understand what was happening, except that the mother was carrying a baby. One thing that is very clear is that traditional cultures believed in prenatal life, and an expectant mother was held in great honour and respect. All mothers have their own version of the feelings that flood their total being on realising that they are expecting. In the majority of women, there is usually joy and excitement at the prospect of bringing forth a new life, of becoming a mother. It is the fulfilment that all married women look forward to. Of course a mother cannot escape a feeling apprehension about the future and the unexpected. This can be more intensified if for various reasons the expectant mother was not psychologically prepared for that pregnancy .
