Each of the six chapters of this small book was originally given in the form of a talk to a group of formators of the Holy Cross Congregation, at a session on "Affective Maturation and Sexual Integration of the Vow of Celibacy from an African Perspective." The session was held at the house of the Carmelite Community in Nairobi from July 28 to 30 1997, and the participants came from all over the continent of Africa. Wide-ranging discussions took place after each of the talks, and some of the insights gained in these discussions have been incorporated into the final text given here.
