The Saint whose priority was the sick.

Camillus was born on 25th May, 1550 in Bucchianico, Italy. His father, Captain Giovanni de Lellis, an important noble, and his wife, Camilla, were overjoyed because they had waited so long for a child and were already elderly.   The city was in a festive mood since it was a holiday to celebrate the feast of their patron,Saint Urban. After the mass, the people all moved to the aquare to watch a military parade of the regiment of Captain Giovanni as they prepared to march to war. Half way through mass Camilla's labour pains began and a friend suggested, "St Francis was born on hay, why not your son?" Camilla followed this advice and was carried in to the barn where her baby was born! The news rapidlu spread and the crowds all hurried to see for themslves this miracle. The Captain dismissed his troops and rushed home to greet the new baby. What joy filled that house! Two days later, the baby was baptised in the parish church and was called Camillus, after his mother Camilla. S
