This small work is meant to help African Christians to know and
understand better how beautiful the Angelus is, and to invite them to pray it
joyfully and assiduously. Muslims pray when the voice of the muezzin sounds
from the minaret. Let Christians also respond to the peal of bells of their
parish reminding them to Pray. The Angelus prayer has a prominent place in
Christian tradition. It is a beautiful Marian prayer helping the faithful to
think frequently of the Annunciation, the event of the Angel Gabriel calling
Mary on behalf of God. Invited to become the Mother of Christ the Saviour, she
replies “Behold the Handmaid of the Lord!” Although brief, at noon the Angelus
puts us in touch with the chief mystery of the Christian faith, at the same
time helping us to respond, day after day, to the call of God to his service.
