To Shepherd the Church, the Family of God in Africa, in the Age of AIDS is the theme which brought Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops together from all Africa and the surrounding Islands in October 2003 in Dakar, Senegal. The Bishops took careful look at the pandemic from a fully-developed pastoral point of view. The two-day workshop occurred within the plenary assembly of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) With much good teaching about AIDS and many effective programmes underway, how can the Church now respond with the extra creativity and greater generosity which the terrible scourge clearly requires? How can the Catholic leaders of Africa raise their voice on behalf of the poor and marginalised, and advocate for the Orphans and widows?
