"Tene" is not an academic work, neither is it a biography of Andre and Guthera. It is not a novel because the events narrated took place, neither is it a historical work, academically speaking. It is a record of events surrounding the life of a couple told to generations. The whole idea of writing this story is to commit to paper memories of what was, and which has now greatly changed: the beginnings of the country Kenya, what was before that, and for the protagonists of the story, their Gikuyu origins, traditions and beliefs; the advent of evangelisation in the colony, through glimpses of the lives of a simple boy and a conservative Gikuyu lass, their epic love story and marriage, and how the couple's staunch faith saturated and imbued their whole beings, igniting them with zeal to pass it on, together with their children, to hundreds of their neighbours, children and adults, at a time of great political upheavals in the country.
