The author presents the life of Fr Witte (1895-1961) to provide a focal point around which his life story may be told of how the Catholic Church came to be established in Kenya and Tanzania. His life and efforts for African education are seen in the context of the evangelisation of East Africa by the Holy Ghost Fathers. In the Church history of Kenya, Fr Witte is recognised as " the pioneer of higher Catholic education." Though not a biography, this book places the life of Fr Witte in the period in which the introduction of modern school education was the instrument by which the Church found recognition and popularity in East Africa. Told here, warts and all, is the life and accomplishments of Fr Witte in the service of Africa education beginning in 1922 when, as a newly ordained priest, he was assigned to St Peter Clavers in Nairobi.
