In Church circles, the cry is, "Get back to the basics!" This book is about getting back to the basics, but not in the conventional way because the understanding of what is basic has evolved. At the Second African Synod, October 2009, the Bishops of Africa stated that there is a need to "go beyond the 'simple catechism'... and put in place an on-going formation programme for all our faithful" (AFSD, 19) The first section of the book is about prayer and the Sacraments. The Lord' s Prayer is basic to prayer, and invites us to enter into a personal relationship with the living God enriched by scripture. Ample reference to scripture is found throughout the book. Only two Sacraments receive attention: Eucharist and Reconciliation. The reason is simple: they should be regularly celebrated. Eucharist is vital nourishment for the Christian journey, Reconciliation restores Christians to the right path. The book challenges Christians to be different so as to link the gap between the spiritual and the journey of life. Far too often this link is not made and the gap between religion and life, faith and culture, is allowed to grow. Christians must bridge this gap by witnessing of the kingdom and to its values in the face of a culture of greed, power and control.
