Isidore Bakanja, born around 1885 in Congo (Belgian Congo, at the time), became a Christian as a teenager. His love for Christ Jesus was translated into prayer and witness. Mild, respectful and pure of heart, he nourished a tender devotion or Mary through the rosary and Scapular, which he had been taught were the signs of being a Catholic. He was mercilessly scourged by an athiest employer because he would not remove his scapular. His agony lasted more than six months. Having forgiven his killer and promising to pray for him, he died on 15 August, 1909 with rosary in his hand and the scapular around his neck.
