Between 1885 and 1887 twenty-two Catholics and twelve Protestants in the Kingdom of Buganda were viciously martyred for the Christian faith. Ten years earlier not one African in the kingdom had been Christian. This is the story of their conversion from paganism, the conflict and tension between the Kabaka and pagan chiefs on the one hand, and the missionaries and Christian converts on the other, and of their final sacrifice, victims of the savage and neurotic rage of Kabaka Mwanga. The twenty two were given the fullest honour of the Church when they were canonised in the autumn of 1964. The martyrs were mostly young men, some still boys, pages of the Kabaka's court. The remarkable way they responded to the message of Christianity and their extraordinary faith and endurance call strongly to mind the courage and conviction of the early Christians in an equally hostile world.
